The Company Behind PayID and BPAY Goes AI-Native: Excuse Gone

If the operator of Australia's core payment rails can go all-in on OpenAI, the last excuse for every risk-averse bank and fintech just disappeared. Australian Payments Plus, or AP+, is not a household name. Yet it sits directly in the middle of the country's money movement. It runs eftpos, the New Payments Platform behind PayID and PayTo, and BPAY. On 7 July, OpenAI published a case study revealing that AP+ has put ChatGPT and Codex to work across the business and inside its own engineering team. This is not a pilot. Not a side experiment. It is a regulated, systemically important organisation deciding that the future of payments belongs to AI.

Who is AP+ and why should you care?

If you have ever tapped a card, paid a bill through BPAY, or sent money to a mobile number using PayID, you have used AP+ infrastructure. The company is the quiet plumbing behind hundreds of millions of transactions every year. That makes it one of the most security-conscious and tightly regulated entities in the Australian financial system. Nothing gets deployed without serious scrutiny. So when such an institution says it has adopted AI across the organisation, the signal to the wider industry is loud and clear: the excuse that AI is too risky for our compliance burden no longer holds.

What the OpenAI case study reveals

According to the case study, AP+ moved with speed once it decided to commit. The company deployed ChatGPT Enterprise for everyday knowledge work and Codex for engineering. The shift was organisation-wide, not a single team experimenting in a corner. The goal is straightforward: move faster without losing operational control. AP+ is showing that AI can be used in a way that respects data privacy, auditability, and resilience. It is not replacing human judgment. It is amplifying it.

Engineering with a copilot

Inside the engineering team, Codex is being used to accelerate code generation, refactoring, and test coverage. That matters deeply for a payments operator, where every line of code affects trust in the system. The case study describes an environment where developers can focus on complex logic while AI handles repetitive lifting. This is exactly the kind of productivity gain that compounds into faster delivery of new payment features.

ChatGPT for the whole business

Beyond engineering, AP+ is using ChatGPT for tasks that were previously manual and slow. Think document analysis, policy drafting, and internal knowledge retrieval. For a company that must constantly update documentation to meet regulatory standards, this is a significant shortcut. It allows compliance and risk teams to spend more time on judgment and less on busywork.

Why this shatters the old excuses

For years, the standard response in banking and payments was: we cannot use AI because of regulation, data sovereignty, or security. AP+ just dismantled that argument. If a payment rail operator can use cloud-based OpenAI tools inside its environment, then a mid-sized lender or a health insurer has far less reason to hesitate. The risk has always been about governance, not about whether AI should be used at all. AP+ has essentially become the reference case for responsible AI adoption under APRA's scrutiny. The message is unambiguous: the technology is ready, the controls can be built, and the cost of doing nothing is growing every quarter.

The road ahead

This is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of a broader shift. As payment infrastructure becomes more software-defined, the ability to ship code faster becomes a competitive weapon. AP+ is using AI to compress the development lifecycle. In a sector where the next PayID or PayTo feature could land months ahead of schedule, organisations that follow AP+'s lead will set the pace. Those that wait for a perfect, zero-risk moment will be left behind. The excuse is gone. The only question left is whether your business will be smart about it.
