The NPP: A quiet revolution, now ubiquitous

PayID, the addressing service that replaces clunky BSB and account numbers with a phone number or email, has made sending money as easy as sharing a contact. Unlike older protocols, ISO 20022 allows transactions to carry rich data — a payroll ID, a tax category code, or an invoice reference. This data richness is why the NPP now processes over 100 million transactions per month, connecting more than 100 financial institutions.

Fees: Cheap but not free

For consumers, real-time transfers on the NPP are often free, bundled into monthly account fees or waived entirely. For businesses, the cost per transaction varies widely. Major banks charge merchants between $0.15 and $0.50 for PayTo payments, a fraction of the $1–$3 typical of credit card networks. Yet for high-volume micropayments — think pay-per-article journalism or ride-share fares — even $0.15 is too much. That’s where the Lightning Network enters the conversation.

The Lightning Network is a second-layer protocol built on the Bitcoin blockchain. It enables near-instant, near-zero-cost transactions by routing payments through peer-to-peer channels. In 2026, Lightning has matured. Major exchanges and fintechs in Australia already support Lightning deposits and withdrawals, and a handful of cafes and online stores accept it. The fee? Typically less than a cent, regardless of amount. For a country that prides itself on financial innovation, the contrast is stark: the NPP is fast and inexpensive, but Lightning is virtually free.

Industry impact: Competition or complement?

Industry observers are divided. Some see Lightning as a niche tool for crypto enthusiasts and remittances — not a threat to a government-backed system used by 25 million people. Others point to its global nature: a Lightning payment from Sydney to São Paulo costs the same as a local one, while the NPP remains domestic. For cross-border real-time payments, which Australia’s banks have long struggled to deliver cheaply, Lightning could be a disruptive force.

Regulatory questions abound. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has yet to issue clear guidelines on Lightning nodes operated by licensed entities. The Reserve Bank is watching closely, mindful that any alternative to the NPP must meet anti-money laundering and consumer protection standards. In the meantime, AP+ has started experimenting with blockchain-based settlement for high-value payments, but it has not embraced Lightning directly.

Forward-looking: The next frontier

By 2030, the line between traditional real-time payments and decentralised networks may blur entirely. Australia could see the NPP integrate with Lightning-compatible bridges, allowing an instant transfer from PayID to a Lightning wallet. Or a new layer-2 protocol — faster and more regulated than Lightning — might emerge from the very banks that built the NPP. What is certain is that the era of free, frictionless, global payments is approaching faster than most anticipated. For now, the NPP remains the reliable workhorse. But its future may depend on how well it learns to ride the lightning.
